We really appreciate all that you do to help us put pressure on the Scottish and UK Governments to take action on unjust debt. From signing our Debt Justice Pledge, to visiting your MPs and MSPs about vulture funds, to helping us organise inspiring events in your area – the range of support we receive from people across Scotland is brilliant.
But we also need your help in a different way – raising money to support our work on Britain’s dodgy deals.
We are taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge to fund a project to enable us to stop new unjust debts being created by the UK’s exports to developing countries. This means we need to raise £1,000 in pledges by the end of the month. These pledges will be added to £1,000 given to us by an anonymous trust fund and used to double donations made online in December.
Are you able to pledge £100 towards our target?
Of course, we understand that many of you will be unable to make a pledge of this amount, so if you would like to donate a smaller amount to our work then please do this during the donation period in December (we’ll send out more information about this nearer the time!). If you know anyone else who might be interested in helping us reach our pledge target, please do let them know about the challenge.
Thank you, as always, for the many way in which you support Jubilee Scotland. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.
Why do we need to fight for No New Unjust Debt?
Most of the debts owed to the UK are created through the UK’s Export Credit Guarantees Department which underwrites deals overseas. If the projects fail, the UK bails out the company, and adds the amount to the debt owed by the developing country. In the past these projects have included arms sales to dictatorships and power plants which never produce electricity – this means citizens of countries in the global south are paying back debts for projects which never benefited them. You can read about why, and how, we need to change this system here.
How Does the Challenge work?
The Big Give Christmas Challenge is a way for us to double any donations we receive between 4th and 17th December, and is a really great opportunity for us to get much needed funding! The online donations we receive in December are doubled using a combination of money donated by our ‘charity champion’ (a fund associated with the Big Give) and our pledges (which we are currently fundraising for). This means that we need to raise £2000 online in December to access our ‘double donations’ pot of money. If we raise less than this, you only need to give us a percentage of your pledge (although we’re still very happy to accept the full amount!). If you have any questions about the challenge, contact Alys.
