August Action Update

Dear Campaigner,

Thanks to all of you who came along to help launch our new campaign last Saturday on Princes Street, where members of the public were intrigued by a gang of shady looking characters dressed in suits, sunglasses and fake moustaches. These were posing as members of the government's Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD) in order to shed light on its bad overseas lending. At a nearby stall, more normally-attired Jubilee activists persuaded hundreds of members of the public to sign postcards to Vince Cable to open the books on this department. Please visit us on flickr to check out photos of the event.

This campaign represents a real opportunity to clean up the UK's foreign lending both past and future, but it won't have sufficient impact without your help. Click here to order postcards and find out more about our asks. If you are able to donate something towards materials that would also give the campaign a fantastic boost. To put things in perspective, £5 will enable us to send a box of postcards to a congregation, £10 can put a briefing in the hands of a relevant MP or MSP, and £20 can pay for an office team member to support a local meeting or lobby. Please click here to donate.

Come along to our talk in the Festival of Spirituality and Peace on Saturday 14th August, 12pm. In collaboration with Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh, a visionary Sikh leader, Habib Malik from Islamic Relief (winner of the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award 2010) and Kathy Galloway, head of Christian Aid in Scotland, this panel will be examining the paradox originally posed by Dom Helder Camara:  “When I feed the hungry, they call me a Saint - when I ask why they are starving?...' . Tickets are available from the Hub and cost £6/4 .

Two final notes: an electronic copy of our last paper newsletter is attached below for those of you who no longer receive a physical mailing, but please feel free to order hard copies from the website if you need them. Twitterers can also now follow us on @jubileescotland.

Best wishes and enjoy your summer
