Author,
broadcaster, campaigner and political comedian Mark Thomas has pledged to support our campaign against the ECGD's 'Dodgy Deals'.
After watching him speak at an event entitled 'Power of the People', representatives from Jubilee Scotland met with Mark, where he called the ECGD (Britain's Export Credit Guarantee Department) a 'debt generator', adding:
"It is a screaming outcry that there exists a publicly funded debt machine. If the ECGD is staying, it needs to be fully accountable, with a no-arms policy and legal standards and measures as penalties"
During the event, held at the Scottish Parliament during Edinburgh's Festival of Politics, Mark had also spoken out publicly about the problems of developing countries being 'trapped' in the IMF
(International Monetary Fund)'s conditionalities of debt relief, which run at odds with health treatments and the fighting of treatable diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
As a veteran campaigner against the ECGD, Mark will be following Jubilee Scotland's 'end the dodgy deals' campaign closely, and hopes to be heavily involved with our work in future. He was even kind enough to sign one of our postcards calling on Vince Cable to reform the ECGD.
