September Action Update

Dear Jubilee Campaigner,

This month's terrible flooding in Pakistan united the international community to take action, arguing for long term solutions to enable better disaster prevention as well as vital short term aid. Pakistan owes a staggering $49 billion in debt and currently makes debt repayments at a rate of $3 billion a year, and there is horror that international assistance is likely to translate into a further $3 billion of debt to the World bank and Asian development bank considering 60% of the population were already below the poverty line before the disaster. For further information and to take action click here.

Meanwhile there was good news for our campaign to End Britain's Dodgy Deals as Mark Thomas, the author, broadcaster and political comedian, pledged his support for the campaign recently after speaking at an Edinburgh Festival of Politics event. The campaign is gaining strength with hundreds of people already signing postcards and sending emails to Vince Cable to ask him to put and end to irresponsible lending. If you haven't don't so already click here to get involved and take action.

The last month has seen changes in the Office on George IV Bridge. Drew Ritchie, who has been on the team as Policy Intern for six months, has gone on to do policy work for Which? consumer magazine in London, where he will no doubt be tackling a different kind of unjust debt - we're sad to see him go and our best wishes go with him. Meanwhile we are delighted to welcome to the team Alys Mumford, our new Outreach Officer. Alys has already put together a handbook to help introduce new activists to the Jubilee campaign - order your copy here - but if you are already part of a congregation, school or interest group that cares about global debt justice she would love to hear from you. Email alys@jubileescotland.org.uk or give her a call on 0131 225 4321.

Finally, we are getting excited about the upcoming Take One Action film festival at the end of the month. Jubilee Scotland in collaboration with other justice organisations are screening three exciting new films including - on 30th September - a co-screening with Islamic Relief of To Catch a Dollar, a film about the Grameen micro-loan Bank, which will be followed by a discussion of Islamic approaches to debt and lending.  The full programme and times can be accessed here. Book early to avoid disappointment and see you there!

Thanks for your continued campaigning and support!
