
UN is being sidelined, just when it is needed the most.The world's poor are those suffering most from the global economic crisis and one of the only legitimate arenas to deal with the crisis is at the UN which is holding a conference on the impact of the financial crisis on developing countries on 24-26th June.
Yet despite campaigners efforts the UK government are not sending either International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander nor Prime Minister Gordon Brown to the conference. In the Guardian this week Nick Dearden from Jubilee Debt Campaign unpicks the politics of how the UN are being sidelined in favour of the less representative "business as usual" forums that are the G20 and the G8. Vulture funds are companies, often with a secret or hidden identity, which buy ‘bad’ debt at cheap prices and then attempt to recover the full amount by suing the original debt holder. These companies often target failing companies, however, more worryingly there has been an increased tendency to also target poor countries.

G20 coming to Scotland!
On November 7-9th the G20 Finance ministers including Alistair Darling will meet in St. Andrews to thrash out deals on how the world responds to the global financial crisis. In September and October Jubilee Scotland alongside a host of other campaign organisations will be running workshops, lobbies and other actions to campaign on the common themes of Jobs, Justice and climate. The last time the G20 met was in London in March when the G20 leaders came up with a variety of proposals to deal with the financial crisis.
