One of the world’s poorest states has the vultures circling as the investment firms Hamsah and Wall Capital have taken Liberia to court for their purchased right to reclaim debts and have been awarded over $20 million. This is precisely the kind of action that Jubilee Scotland, alongside Jubilee Debt Campaign, has been fighting to prevent. Click Here to Take Action
At their St Andrews meeting on the 7th November the finance ministers of the most powerful twenty countries in the world - the G20 - were challenged with a demand for action on the key issues of jobs, justice and climate. A peaceful demonstration was held in the morning on the nearby beach before a people's summit in the afternoon where a range of inspiring speakers and activists were heard on a variety of subjects. Some progress was even made by the meeting itself, particularly when Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling committed to a transaction tax that would greatly advance regulation of international financial speculation.
As the Copenhagen talks drew to a close on Friday, the inability of rich countries to own up to the ecological problems they have created, or to offer adequate compensation to those countries worst effected by climate change became clear. Whilst holding poor countries to the repayment or monetary debts that stem from questionable origins and as a result of unjust actions, rich countries continue to ignore the huge debts that they themselves must repay. The financial offers placed on the bargaining tables at Copenhagen fell far short of the amounts that would be needed to truly grapple with climate change. They were also offered in the form of loans, thus ensuring that poor countries must continue to pay for problems for which they themselves were not responsible.
Jubilee Scotland is constantly seeking to improve the quality of its work and ensure that its campaigns are clear and effective. To this end we would be exceptionally grateful if you could take two minutes to answer a few short questions about debt and the debt campaign.
Thank you very much - Happy Christmas from all of the office team.
