September Action Update

Dear Jubilee Campaigner,

This month's terrible flooding in Pakistan united the international community to take action, arguing for long term solutions to enable better disaster prevention as well as vital short term aid. Pakistan owes a staggering $49 billion in debt and currently makes debt repayments at a rate of $3 billion a year, and there is horror that international assistance is likely to translate into a further $3 billion of debt to the World bank and Asian development bank considering 60% of the population were already below the poverty line before the disaster. August Action Update

Dear Campaigner,

Thanks to all of you who came along to help launch our new campaign last Saturday on Princes Street, where members of the public were intrigued by a gang of shady looking characters dressed in suits, sunglasses and fake moustaches. These were posing as members of the government's Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD) in order to shed light on its bad overseas lending. At a nearby stall, more normally-attired Jubilee activists persuaded hundreds of members of the public to sign postcards to Vince Cable to open the books on this department. Please visit us on flickr to check out photos of the event.

Dear Jubilee Scotland Campaigner,

April Action Update

Dear Jubilee Scotland Campaigner

Congratulations! Thanks to your unstinting campaigning the UK has become the first country in the world to legislate against the predations of Vulture Funds. This law will prevent any repeat of the shameful verdict delivered last year whereby Vulture Funds were able to have their claim on Liberia's money upheld in a UK court. Click here to read the summary and detail of a campaign that has shown that a popular fight for justice is impossible to stop - campaigning works!

March Action Update

Dear Jubilee Scotland supporter

What is the point of cancelling the debts of the past if we are creating new ones for the future? New debts that are opposed by civil society in the countries that are supposedly the beneficiaries? This is the theme that emerges from two international campaigns that Jubilee Scotland is proud to currently support.

Vulture Swoop on Liberia Increases Urgency of Government Action

One of the world’s poorest states has the vultures circling as the investment firms Hamsah and Wall Capital have taken Liberia to court for their purchased right to reclaim debts and have been awarded over $20 million. This is precisely the kind of action that Jubilee Scotland, alongside Jubilee Debt Campaign,  has been fighting to prevent. Click Here to Take Action
