Scotland: Nation of debt justice
Jubilee Scotland believes in debt justice – we believe it is wrong that some of the world’s most vulnerable countries are kept in poverty due to past debts. Many of these debts came from dodgy deals – dictators who borrowed money for arms to oppress innocent citizens, money invested in white elephant projects, and lent to corrupt regimes. Many countries have already paid back the original amount they borrowed, but are still kept in debt due to unreasonable interest rates. And despite knowing the problems of global debt, creditors have continued to lend recklessly, with very little regulation on the deals which create unjust debt. Read our case studies to see how unjust debt affects countries around the world.
It can’t go on
Our Debt Justice Pledge is a way to show that you disagree with the current systems of global debt, and we want Scotland to do things differently. We want a Scotland which:
-
holds no unjust debts
-
doesn’t create new unjust debt
-
is a seat of arbitration for unjust and unpayable debt
-
promotes debt justice internationally
